X-Fly: an award-winning programmable STEM drone

Challenge

Build an affordable, programmable nano drone running flight control and wireless comms on a single low-cost MCU.

Approach

ESP32 with a Madgwick + Extended-Kalman-Filter fusion stack, six cascaded PID loops, a PCB-integrated airframe, and an external SDK.

Result

Won Gold (Education) and Bronze (Overall) at the National ICT Awards 2023 — and is the first drone platform designed end to end (PCB and firmware) in Sri Lanka.
