X-Fly: an award-winning programmable STEM drone

Challenge

Build an affordable, programmable nano drone running flight control and wireless comms on a single low-cost MCU.

Approach

ESP32 with a Madgwick + Extended-Kalman-Filter fusion stack, six cascaded PID loops, a PCB-integrated airframe, and an external SDK.

Result

Won Gold (Education) and Bronze (Overall) at the National ICT Awards 2023, and it is the first drone platform designed end to end (PCB and firmware) in Sri Lanka.
